Inspired by Goseong Samilpo, an eighteenth-century painting by Sim Sajeong, Snow Falling Samilpo began with a surprising discovery. The white dots drifting across the landscape are not snowflakes, but traces left by insects eating through the paper. From this detail, Suzy Lee imagines snow multiplying until the entire world turns white. Reinterpreting a historic Korean artwork through picturebook form, the book playfully bridges past and present. It could even be seen as an unlikely collaboration between Sim Sajeong, bookworms, conservators, and Lee herself.

이 책은 2022년 6월, 서울 성북동의 간송미술관 건물이 보수 작업에 들어가기 직전 마지막 전시 ‘보화수보(寶華修補)―간송의 보물 다시 만나다’에서 보았던 심사정(1707-1769)의 "삼일포(三日浦)"에서 시작되었습니다. "삼일포"가 푸른 하늘과 호수 위에 동글동글한 흰 눈송이가 날리는 겨울 풍경 그림인 줄 알았는데, 눈처럼 보였던 동그라미가 실은 벌레가 종이를 파먹어 간 자국이었고 미술관 측에서 그림을 보존 처리하는 과정에서 흥취를 살리려 부러 구멍을 그대로 두었다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 거기서 출발하여 한 송이 두 송이 소리 없이 내리던 눈이 어느새 함박눈이 되어 온통 하얀 세상이 되는 상상, 종국에 있고 없음의 경계가 사라지는 어떤 풍경을 담은 “눈 내리는 삼일포” 그림책이 되었습니다.
