Inspired by Korea’s mountainous landscape and folktale tradition, Hills over Hills brings together eighteen interconnected stories about humans, animals, objects, and supernatural beings. These tales unfold across five hills, creating a journey through a rich folklore world. The book’s accordion-style binding transforms reading into a spatial experience: when fully opened and stood upright, it reveals a panoramic landscape of layered hills. By combining storytelling and book design, Hills over Hills invites readers to explore Korean folktales as both narrative and sculptural form.

프로젝트 그룹 바캉스의 ‘전래 프로젝트’ 시리즈 중 이수지의 그림책입니다. 우리 옛이야기가 담고 있는 풍부한 함의, 다양한 코드, 흥미로운 이미지들을 발판 삼아 새로운 시도를 담은 아티스트북을 만듭니다.
산이 많은 지형 덕에 우리 옛이야기는 유난히 고개에서 벌어지는 이야기가 많습니다. "해와 달이 된 오누이"의 떡장수 어머니는고개마다호랑이를만나고, "네 장사의 모험"에서 곰배손이는 힘이 남아돌아 매일 곰배로 고개 봉우리를 밀었다 당겼다 한다지요. 마시면 젊어지는 샘물이 솟는 고개도 있고요, 넘어지면 삼 년밖에 못 산다는 "삼 년 고개"도 있습니다.
"오늘따라 이 고개엔 뭔 일이 이리도 많다냐!" 주인공 아이의 말마따나, 인간이 동물과, 무생물과, 초자연적 존재와 얽혀 펼치는 열여덟 이야기를 다섯 고개에 엮어 넣었습니다. 병풍식 제본으로, 책을 펴서 세우면 굽이굽이 다섯 고개가 겹쳐 장관을 이루는 독특한 그림책입니다.
